Langkawi Port Sdn Bhd (LPSB) recognises that protecting the environment is an important part of operating a port in an island destination like Langkawi. As the port continues to support the island's tourism, transportation and economic activities LPSB is also looking at ways to make its operations cleaner, more efficient and sustainable.
The Green Initiative at LPSB brings together a number of efforts aimed at reducing environmental impact, improving energy efficiency and encouraging the use of cleaner technologies. These include the use of renewable energy, energy-efficient systems, better waste management, digitalisation and other initiatives that can help reduce unnecessary resource consumption.
One of the new key initiatives is the Pilot Project for an Electric Passenger Ferry (EV Passenger Ferry). The project is an important step towards introducing electric and cleaner transportation into Langkawi's maritime environment. By using electric propulsion instead of conventional fuel, the ferry is expected to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions while providing an opportunity for LPSB to gain practical experience in operating an electric vessel.
The pilot project also allows LPSB to understand the requirements and challenges of electric ferry operations including charging infrastructure, energy management, maintenance and daily operations. The experience gained from the project can help guide future plans for cleaner maritime transportation in Langkawi.
At the port itself, LPSB is also exploring ways to reduce its environmental footprint through renewable energy, more efficient use of electricity, responsible waste management and digital solutions. Simple changes such as reducing paper use and improving the way resources are monitored and managed can also contribute to a more sustainable operation.
For LPSB, going green is not about making one major change overnight. It is a continuous effort to improve the way the port operates while balancing environmental responsibility, operational needs and the development of Langkawi.
Through these initiatives, LPSB hopes to contribute towards a cleaner and more sustainable Langkawi while continuing to provide reliable port and maritime services to the community, tourist and businesses that depend on the port.
